4th April 2020 Mt. Biking: Around Felixstowe Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny Max Speed: 18.61 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 17.50 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Day 12 (lock down) Saturday 4th April - bike **** - Felixstowe Circuit – Sunny. With a sunny and mild weekend forecast and with no windsurfing possible at the moment as the corona virus takes hold and the death rate increases daily a lot of the sailors have replaced their boards for their bikes! Although the Government is now strongly advising everyone to stay at home, I think you need to get out every day for the sake of your sanity! After Mag saw a nice sunrise yesterday I decided to join her today and we rushed down to the very quiet Prom but there was a sea fog so there was no chance of seeing the sun today:( We did walk to the end at Jacobs Ladder where we spoke to a sea fisherman taking his gear down to the beach in a wheel chair hoping to get a couple of hours in out of the way before someone complained! Then after a lazy hour reading with a cuppa it was time to do my exercises in the now sunny garden! I learned on Facebook that I had a pic in todays EADT’s so I really needed to go to a shop for the first time since Annecy in France, I was not overly keen on going either! So, after lunch and reading the reports of the other bike rides, I headed out at 2.30. I avoided the Prom and took the roads down to Felixstowe Ferry, stopping at the Cliff car park to look at the deserted beach, the only vehicle was a police van to stop people parking I believe:) At the Ferry I take the usual River Deben path which is as stunning as ever set against a deep blue sky:) There was a few people walking and on bikes but everyone was very friendly even when it was difficult to pass with a 2m gap. People thinned out on reaching Kings Fleet so I decided to carry on to Kirton creek which is several miles on a bumpy path past Ramshot Pub and Church. The strange thing is the lack of boats on the river, none to be precise with very few on the moorings either! With the tide low there were a few birds in the mud as I reached Kirton Creek heading inland along the nice path to Hemley church past loads of Blackthorn flowers. I then took the footpath coming out at the park at Newbourne. It is then a long slog on the road which is up and down reaching Kirton. Then over the A 14 with next to no cars, so it looked like people were heeding the advice not to travel in the car:) Stopping at Solar for a paper and fizzy water I struggled home with 12 small bottles. I had been out 2hrs 30 min. covering 17.50 miles seeing all the best that Suffolk has to offer, it would have been 5 stars if Mag had been with me! PS - a lot of the other cyclists are keen on Starva stats and getting a good average but although I take my GPS with me to get a track on Google Earth I stop too many times to take pictures to get an average and just like ambling along taking in the wonderful scenery!!!
